Sister vs. Sister: Dress Edition

There once were two sisters, Briana and Bailey. Bailey was the oldest, which meant she was always getting new clothes, electronics, etc. Briana, on the other hand, always received Bailey’s hand-me-downs. It seemed as if they were the perfect amount of years a part that as soon as Bailey was growing out of something, Briana was growing into it. Most days Briana received Bailey’s hand-me-downs with no complaints, but one day she was struggling to find something to wear so she walked into Bailey’s room hoping to find something.

When she entered the room she saw shopping bags all over the bedroom floor. It seemed that Bailey was always getting new clothes, but there were still clothes in her closet with tags on them.

Briana thought to herself , “surely Bailey wouldn’t mind if I went ahead and took this dress that has been in her closet for over a month? She might not even notice it’s gone!”

So she slipped her hand into the back of the closet, grabbed the hanger, and snuck out of Bailey’s room. Little did Briana know that Bailey had been saving the dress for a special occasion. Of course the day Briana decided to take the dress happened to be the same day as Bailey’s one year anniversary with her boyfriend, and she had planned to wear that same dress.

Bailey came home from work and began to get ready for her big date, and while Bailey was getting ready Briana left for a friend’s birthday dinner. After her shower, Bailey went to set her outfit out and there was no dress in her closet for her to wear. Panic took over, and Bailey began to run around frantically. She ripped all of her clothes out of her closet, pulled out all of her dirty clothes, and tore a part every inch of her room. There was no dress. This wasn’t the first time she had clothes disappear, and she knew just who to blame.

“BRIANA!”

The house remained silent.

“BRIANA, GIVE ME BACK MY DRESS.”

Still nothing.

So she pulled out her phone and texted,

“Briana, do you have my Dress? I really need it for my anniversary dinner tonight.

Briana, who was on her way downtown for dinner, realized what she had just done.

She thought to herself, “if I admit that I took the dress she’s going to make me turn back around, and I don’t want to be late to this dinner.”

So instead of telling the truth, Briana came up with a lie that she thought seemed believable.

“Hey Bailey, I looked in your closet for something to wear tonight and while looking I noticed the dress had been attacked by moths. Mom made me throw it out.”

Bailey read the text and was so confused. If there were moths in her closet, then why were all her other clothes still in perfect condition? It was in that moment Bailey realized her sister was lying. Instead of calling Briana out for the obvious lie, she decided to mess with her as well.

Briana was obsessed with her cat Mia, and Bailey knew it. So she took Mia and hid her in their parents closet so Briana couldn’t find her. Bailey left for her dinner with her boyfriend, and waited for Briana’s panic text.

Briana got home from the birthday dinner and realized there was something different about the house. It seemed emptier.

“Mia?”

No response.

“Mia kitty! Where are you?”

Nothing.

Briana pulled out her phone and instantly started panicking.

“Bailey!! OMG. I think something happened to Mia. Did you let her out on accident?”

Bailey waited a while to text back so that she could come up with something clever. She looked at her boyfriend and said,

“What do you think I should say happened to the cat?”

He said, “you should tell her that a hawk came and grabbed the cat!”

Bailey was satisfied with that response and thought Briana would fall for it, so she went ahead and sent the text.

“No! The craziest thing happened. I opened up the door to leave, and Mia darted out. Before I could grab her, a Hawk swooped down and took her away!”

Briana looked at this text and stared at it for a long time. She responded,

“A hawk? I’ve never seen a hawk here a day in my life thats just downright insane!”

Bailey full of sass texted back,

“As insane as a moth deciding to destroy only one of my clothing items out of the closet full of clothes?”

It was in that moment that Briana realized she was busted. She could either decide to own up to her lie, or try to tell more lies to cover up the first lie. She took the high road.

“You’re right Bailey… I’m sorry I lied to you. I put your dress on because I hadn’t seen you wear it and it had been in your closet for a while. I’ll put it back in your room. Where’s Mia?”

Bailey thought about the end goal to Briana’s lie. What on earth was she going to do with the dress when she got back home and she was wearing it? She just had to know the answer. She texted Briana back,

“She’s in mom and dad’s closet.

What were you going to do with my dress after you wore it tonight since you said it was destroyed by moths?”

Briana looked at the text and thought about it for a moment before responding.

“I guess I was going to destroy it when I got home and throw it in the trash… Good thing you texted me or I would have ruined a dress for nothing!”

Bailey laughed at her sister’s stupid response, put the phone away, and enjoyed the rest of the evening with her boyfriend.

Author's Note:
I based this story off of the Stolen Plow. In the story there were two traders that were friends. One man borrowed his friends plow, sells it, and then claims that it gets eaten by mice. The owner of the plow thought that sound ridiculous so to combat it, he created a ridiculous story of how his friends son got carried away by birds. In the end the friend takes him to court and he says that if his story of a bird carrying away a boy is ridiculous, that mice eating through a plow is equally ridiculous. In the end the man gets his plow back and his friend gets his son back. I decided to change the characters and the scenario up just a bit, but stay true to the main concept that lying isn't always the best option. One major thing I did change was that they did not have to go to court, because Briana decided to take responsibility for her own actions.

  1. Hey Briana.
I really liked your story. It was very funny. I like how in the end the two sisters apologize to each other and make up easily instead of holding on to grudges. All in all, your story was pretty good. I just wish you had an author’s note explaining the original story so I could have known the basis behind this one.

  2. Hey Briana,

This was an interesting way of telling the story, especially of the sisters attacking each other of the things they loved the most. I liked the moral of the story of not lying and honesty is the best policy. It was nice to see the sites make up just like the original story. Overall, good job for making the story engaging and interesting to keep on reading.

  3. Hey, Briana! I thought your story was really funny; the story between two sisters seems like something that could actually happen between two siblings, and I thought that made it very relatable. Reading your author's note, I was able to realize how it connected with the original story, and that helped me appreciate how creative it was. Great work!

  4. Hey briana!
I think it's kind of funny that I can sympathize with this story as a boy, but my little brother used to steal my clothes all the time. It was bizarre because one day i wouldn't be able to find a pair of pants or something and next thing I know he'd be wearing it around. i like how you changed the story to be a bit less serious than the source material was.

  5. Hey Briana,

I loved this story. It was made so much better by the fact that I know you and honestly until I got to the end and read the author's note I was not 100% sure this wasn't just you sharing a funny childhood story. So well done on making it super believable! I also loved that you made your own character take the high road rather than having the character go to court or deal with your parents. Great job!

  6. Hello Briana,

I enjoyed reading your story. I can definitely relate to Bailey even though I am an only child. I also have many clothes in my closet that have tags on them. I also save clothes for special occasions so I can see where Bailey is coming from. I like how Bailey gave her sister a taste of her own medicine by taking her cat away! Well written !
