Reading Notes: Part A, More Jatakas Tales

Image
The Red Bud Tree: In this story 4 brothers go to a tree at 4 different times of the year, which causes them to see the same tree different ways. When each brother described the way they saw the tree they each claimed the other brother was wrong, but the end of the story it is revealed that they were all indeed right. When reading this story I thought I could write a story on the over all theme that just because someone doesn't see something the same way as you do, doesn't mean they are wrong. The Stolen Plow: I kind of found this story humorous. There once were two traders that were friends. One man borrowed his friends plow, sells it, and then claims that it gets eaten by mice. The owner of the plow thought that sound ridiculous so to combat it, he created a ridiculous story of how his friends son got carried away by birds. In the end the friend takes him to court and he says that if his story of a bird carrying away a boy is ridiculous, that mice eating through a plow i

Week 10 Story: Reign of Terror

Image
We last left off with a new Queen in power, Jezzabelle. Kat and the King have been banished, and darkness has swept over the kingdom. Though the king gave up his throne without any hesitation, you don’t really think he would go down with out a fight? As Jezzabelle watched the king and Kat walk into the forest, hand in hand, her heart grew cold. For years she had watched the king adore his daughter, but she never intended her plan to fail. If she wasn’t going to be able to get her happy ending, no one else could either. Jezzabelle’s eyes had flames of revenge burning in them while she yelled: “GUARD.” Immediately the door flew open and a guard responded: “Jezzabelle, how can we be of service?” With a slight smirk Jezzabelle said, “Please, call me Queen Jezz. And as your queen, I demand you to find the king and bring him to me. The king has abandoned his bride and also his kingdom, and for that he must be punished. As for the princess, Kat, bring me her heart. Those two must s

Learning Challenge: DESKERCISE!!!

Image
DESKERCISE!!!!! This assignment was so fun. I find myself sitting at my desk a lot, or even in class sometimes and in need of a good stretch but have no idea how to do it. I read the Deskercise: 17 Exercises You Can Do At or Near Your Desk  and found a couple of stretches that interest me. I can't wait to try them out this week. 1) Bruxism Exercise. I like this one because I've found my job popping and locking a little bit lately. When reading the article I tempted out the deskercise for a few seconds and instantly felt relief in my jaw. 2) Windmills. I typically find relief through arm stretches when I'm sitting, but I feel as if it only relieves my desire to move for as short amount of time. I think that physically swinging my arms around will give me some of the same relief, but also be a longer fix to my desire to fidget and not be confined to a desk all day. 3) the last tip the article gives to just add movement to my day will probably be an easy one. Sitting ki

Growth Mindset: REAL

Image
When it comes to growth mindset I think that it requires these four things I have listed above. A teacher should recognize each student as an individual, instead of as a whole. Each student learns differently and has different strengths and weaknesses. Before teaching a student something a teacher must recognize how the student best learns and what he/she struggles with. From there teachers should move to encouragement instead of criticism. It's so easy to put a terrible grade on the paper and leave out the efforts that were put into an assignment or test, but before you can correct what is wrong it is best to point out what is right. From there we move to adapt. If a teacher has already recognized how a student best learns, it is important they adapt to their learning style. If a teacher wishes to have growth mindset in the class, they must be willing to meet each student where they are at individually. Lastly, once the first three things happen a student is able to lea

Tech Tip: Canvas Calendar

At the beginning of the semester, I was not familiar with the calendar features! India Epics is pretty much the only class that has all of the assignments on the calendar, but I did discover that you can subscribe the canvas calendar to your iCalendar... GAME CHANGER. The organized nerd in me loves this feature the most, its so convenient. Now canvas tells me when assignments are due, my phone lights up when assignments are due, and my computers pulls up notifications also! There is no excuse to miss any assignments!

Reading Notes: Part B, More Jataka Tales

Image
The Lion In Bad Company : The theme of this story is one that I live my everyday life by. Bad company produces bad morals. I think it would be fairly easy to create a fairy tale from this Jataka. It could be my first story told about a prince instead of a princess. A prideful young prince can receive bad advice from someone he think she can trust. The king can try to warn him that the idea is not good, but the prince lets his pride take control and follows through with his bad idea any way. Making the wrong choice will seem promising for a short while, but then when trouble comes knocking the "Friend" disappears, leaving the prince to pick up the pieces. Beauty and Brownie : This story has a theme of paying close attention when wise people give instruction. I can't think of a better character to miss directions than a princess who think she knows everything. The Jatakas make it a little harder to add on to my already existing stories, but they can make for short stories

Reading Notes: Part A, Jataka Tales

Image
The Ox Who Won The Forfeit : Overall theme that encouragement is a better tool to use than intimidation when it comes to leadership. My last Cindiarella story ends with the evil stepmother taking over the kingdom. My final story can have the stepmother playing the role of the ox owner who is uses his authority in a bad way. The Kingdom would be upset with the switch in power and the king and his daughter can create a resistance that can overthrow the queen. At the end of the story the king and his daughter can resume their rightful place at the thrown, thus showing that an encouraging leader is desired more. I could even possibly bring back Steve and Ella to help them gain the kingdom back! The Ox Who Envied The Pig : I loved the theme from this story. Its the typical "things aren't as they appear." I feel like its so easy for us to lose sight of what really matters and be envious of the things that we really don't fully understand. I think if I wanted to ditch my

Famous Last Words: Time Flies

Image
"Time flies when you're having fun!" That statement has never seemed more true to me than this past week. After the craziness of my Monday and Tuesday (midterms and presentations), I took a couple of days just to have fun. So far this semester I haven't had the most fun because I had such a strict schedule when I was working, interning, and volunteering. A few weeks ago I quit my job, and I've had a little more time to do things that I enjoy. I get to spend more time with my boyfriend, sleep in, make my own meals, and go to bed at a more decent hour! This weekend was definitely proof that time does really fly when you're having fun! My best friend of 15 years got married and I was able to ditch reality for 2 days to go be a part of her big day. Before I knew it, the night was over and all that was left was   my wilted flower crown and these pictures to prove the night was indeed a fun time.   My famous last words for reader's is to remember that th

Reading Notes: Karmic Revolution, Part B

Image
Son of the Sun : I really liked this story. I think it could be interesting to see if there is a way to incorporate her gift to summon any god into a fairytale. It kind of made me think of being able to summon a fairygod mother. If I decide to continue adding to the sleeping beauty story, I may be able to use this! One Hundred Sons : With the darkness in this story I really felt like I could use this part of the Mahabharata for the evil witch in my sleeping beauty story to get her revenge on the king! I'm not really sure what that would look like, but I think it could make for an interesting story! Evil Minions

Reading Notes: Karmic Revolution, Part A

Image
I really enjoyed part A of the film. I remember struggling through the Mahabharata last week, but now that I'm watching this video I'm understanding it a little better. Satyavati's Secret : I was really intrigued by the story of Vyasa impregnating the three different women, and him foretelling what the sons would turn out as because of their reactions. I think this story could be one that would be able to be retold as a fairytale pretty easily. I also loved the underlying tone of not judging a book by its cover, it really reminds me of Beauty and the Beast! I'm not sure If I could make the story work, but I'm up for giving it a shot. The Blind Bride : A second story from the video that I liked was of the Bride who gave up her sight for the king. I think it is a beautiful, selfless act and I would love to try to incorporate something similar into one of my stories. Overall, I found the videos super helpful for simplifying the Mahabharata's stories for the

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

Image
Feedback in . The comments classmates have been leaving on my comment wall have been helpful and encouraging! I wasn't really sure how people would feel about a fairytale theme for stories, but they seem to be liking it. The most helpful comments have been ones that have suggested giving backgrounds for characters, adding more characters, and also making my dialogue match the 'era' my story is set in. Those are practical things that I've been able to add in my new stories, and also edit when I am revising my older ones!  2. Feedback out . I think my feedback has been decent. I'm really terrible at being an active reader and noticing things that need to be fixed. That's probably been the biggest challenge, so I've had to start taking notes while I read. I have learned a lot from other people's projects. My classmates are way better at using dialogue in their stories than me, so I've been working on that!  3. Blog comments . I have loved gett

Review: Library Ghose

Image
Library Ghost Video I have heard of the "ghost tours" on campus, but had no idea that there was a ghost in the library! People have only ever talked about the underground tunnels and Holmberg having ghosts in them! I'll never feel the same studying in the library anymore.

Week 8 Progress

Image
Looking Back: I am really happy with my progress. I have 208/205 needed for an A at this point in the semester, which to me sounds pretty good. I do have a routine that I've been doing every week, but recently I quit my job so I think my routine will look a little different since I have more time to do homework now. I think I may try to do more extra credit options every week just to get more ahead with my points. If I can finish this class a little early I think that will help me a lot at the end of the semester when it gets stressful again. Looking Forward: I think I want to try getting all my assignments done before the weekend just so that I have more time to do fun things. These past 7 weeks I've done homework every day except for Saturdays, which has been miserable. I don't have class MWF so I should be out doing exciting things and enjoying senior year! Image

Famous Last Words: Choose Wisely

Image
Image These past few weeks have been stressful, but I've tried my best to not let them put me behind on my class work! My famous last words this week would have to be choose wisely. I can't say I've made the best academic choices the past couple of weeks. I've missed a couple of classes, made a couple of poor decisions in choosing my groups for projects, and have made poor time management decisions. If I could go back and do it again I wouldn't have missed those classes or picked the people I have chosen to work with for the rest of the semester. I have been super stressed as midterms have been approaching because no one in my groups will do the assignment. I have a group paper and presentation due on Tuesday and not a single person has done a thing. Since I have so much on my plate I have had 0 motivation to do any of the assignments. It's been a rough week, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! OU/TX is next weekend and that will be a little b

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Image
Looking back: I've really been enjoying this semester, and all the stories I have been reading. I would have to say I prefer the Ramayana over the Mahabharata. I'm finding it harder to follow the stories in the Mahabharata since there are so many different characters. My class notes have been really helpful with my writing. I've pretty much followed through with writing a story over what I took notes for, except this week I failed to write a story. My favorite part of the semester has definitely been the portfolio project. I remember being bummed when my schedule didn't allow me to do the storybook project, but I have loved getting to rewrite some of my original stories for my portfolio. I'm really proud of my website and my stories. Everyone seems to enjoy reading them, which is a plus! Image: This image would definitely have to be my favorite one that I have used so far. Every time I'm writing about a fairytale I just imagine myself in this place and the

Reading Notes: Mahabharata, Part D

Image
Dragon The Night Raid : In this story the Pandava brother's camp is targeted and Draupadi's sons and brother are killed. Draupadi naturally wants revenge after this is done. When reading this story I thought it would be cool to make the bad character turn into a dragon like the villain does in Snow White. The Drago would go and seek out to kill the dwarves who saved the princess, and then they would have to slay the dragon. The Forests and It's Ghost : In this story those that died in the battle get to come back to life for one night. If through out my fairytale I decided to kill off any of my characters I think it would be a great plot line to include this story and have them come back to life! In the story them being alive isn't permanent, but I think I would to give everyone a happy ending.

Reading Notes: Mahabharata, Part C

Image
Rumplestiltskin Jayadratha and Draupadi : What better fairy tale story than one where the princess needs saving? In this story Draupadi is stolen from the Pandava brothers. Even though my sleeping beauty character from last week's story is about a different character from this epic, it could be interesting to put her in the place of Draupadi to add some drama. Either that or I can switch to a whole new fairy tale and tell it from Snow white's point of view since she lives with 7 dwarves and gets taken from them.  Riddles At The Lake : In this story the brothers must answer riddles before taking a drink from this particular lake. 4 of the brothers refuse to listen to the directions and end up dying because of it. I think it would be interesting to use this story as a task for  the dwarves (or whoever) when they are trying to save the princess that gets stolen, or I could tell it based of the fairy tale with rumplestiltskin! The riddles are pretty much the only reason why
